Solving Healthcare Policy With Health Sharing
Recent months have held ongoing legislative discussions concerning the possible repeal and replacement of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), also known as Obamacare. Although Liberty HealthShare does not align with or endorse any political party, we make a point of staying on top of any policy developments that might affect our membership at both the federal and state level. Several months ago, Liberty HealthShare Executive Director Dale Bellis and HealthShare Radio host John Daly interviewed former Virginia governor and presidential candidate Jim Gilmore.
Annual Physicals, Fever Phobia, & Antibiotics
Viewpoints from a Naturopathic Physician Here at Liberty HealthShare, we strive to create an environment in which our members are empowered to make informed decisions about the care they pursue for themselves and their families. For example, Liberty is proud to share in eligible expenses within the realm of certain naturopathic and alternative treatments. Dr. Kendra Pearsall, NMD, is a member of our Physician Advisory Board and she shares her expertise here as part of our physician post series. The following are a few medical questions our members pose with answers from Dr. Pearsall, based in a naturopathic approach to health.
Back-To-School Check-Ups & Vaccinations
The school year just ended, but we all know it won't be long before we're shopping back to school sales in anticipation of the start of the new year. You probably don't need to worry about those purchases just yet, but this is a good time to plan ahead for your child's back to school check-up and, if necessary, his or her vaccinations.
Positive Ways Your Pet Affects You
Those of us who are pet owners know that having a dog or cat - or bird, reptile, amphibian, or rodent, depending on your interests - makes life a little bit better. Each breed and individual animal has its quirks, but generally, there is a bond between owner and pet. In the case of dogs and (some) cats, they're waiting when you come home, ready to play, in some cases looking like they're actually smiling because they've been reunited with you after a WHOLE day apart. Have you ever noticed that being around a pet has a calming effect on your mental and emotional state? Certainly, there are some pets that bring rambunctious energy everywhere they go, but there are others that seem to simply enjoy being nearby. The calming effect of pets is no illusion.
Dad Jokes & Father's Day Gifts
This Sunday, June 18th is Father's Day. While there isn't quite the same level of gift and card-purchasing panic leading up to the day as on Mother's Day weekend, the holiday still offers a great opportunity to show our dads and father figures that they are loved and appreciated. Before we get to gift ideas for the dads in our lives, we need to address the elephant in the room. We've all experienced this eye-roll-inducing phenomenon, common to most paternal figures probably the whole world over.
Perspectives On VideoMedicine
Over the past several months, here on the blog, we have featured articles about Liberty HealthShare's cooperation with VideoMedicine. Our relationship with this company makes it possible for members to see a doctor via a secure video platform accessible through a smartphone app. Thanks to Liberty's billing technology, eligible costs incurred for VideoMedicine visits can be processed rapidly and either be applied to members' AUA or submitted for sharing. We're happy that this service makes our members' access to healthcare more satisfactory and convenient.
Member Motivations - Healthy Tips From Sue
In last month's post, I shared my main motivation for pursuing health: love for my grandchildren. What keeps me on track and making healthy choices is the desire to be in their lives for a long time. Not only do I want to be around, but I also want to be able to keep up with them and actively participate in all the important events that will define their lives over the years to come. In the motivation post, I detailed a long list of excuses which, from time to time, we are all guilty of making where our health and fitness are concerned. Life is stressful, busy, and tiring. Work, friends, family, and our other commitments play tug-of-war with our time and energy. Sometimes the only thing that helps us achieve success is an incentive...some sort of carrot we can chase on our way to better health (better carrots than cake!). So I asked our members, "What motivates you?" Or said a different way, "What is your driving force?"
Putting Rubber To The Road Increased Our Faith
From time to time, we hear from a member who experienced an emergency medical cost just days or weeks after joining Liberty HealthShare. Dealing with a large expense like an emergency room visit can be nerve-wracking, especially if you are new to the concept of healthcare sharing. CindyAnn S., a Liberty HealthShare member in Florida, found herself in this position when her son broke his arm just 9 days into their membership. Here is her story:
TV Moms & Mother's Day Gifts
Mother's Day is Sunday, May 14th. Coming up with the right gift can be hard, but here's a fun approach. There's no one quite like your mother (feel free to steal that line for your greeting card!), but she might remind you of an iconic TV mom you've come to love. Using these memorable ladies as our template, let’s imagine how they might like to be celebrated on Mother's Day and see if their preference also works for your real-life, one-in-a-million mom.
Healthcare Consumerism: The Power Of Patient Choice
Elaina George, MD Physician Advisory Board Chairman, Liberty HealthShare Since the passage of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), the American healthcare system has undergone significant changes that affect everyone, whether they are patients or not. The price of health insurance and out of pocket costs have continued to rise while access has fallen. In fact, the US healthcare system remains the most expensive in the world, and yet it continues to rank last compared to other western countries. Additionally, there has been a decrease in the number of private physicians, community and rural hospitals have closed, and prescription drug costs have continued to rise. As a result, Americans continue to pay more for prescription medication than patients in other countries do.
Lowering Costs Through Pre-Notification
If you are a Liberty HealthShare member, you know we are not an insurance company. We are unique in many ways, most of all because we are driven by a member focus rather than a desire to please shareholders and collect profits. We facilitate the sharing of medical costs among the people who participate in this voluntary community, but the funds come from our members, not corporate coffers. For this reason, we often remind our members to do everything they can to reduce the often outrageous costs associated with healthcare. There are a variety of ways in which we encourage this stewardship mindset. One of them is through our pre-notification process.
Motivation And Health – Healthy Tips From Sue
The dictionary defines “motivation” this way: The reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way; the general desire or willingness of someone to do something. Motivation has become quite the popular topic in the past several decades. Everywhere you look, books by influential motivational speakers top the bestseller list. Courses and conferences sell out. Clearly, people are looking for reasons and ways to achieve more; to become the best version of themselves. How many times have we eagerly started a weight loss program or joined a gym, karate, or Zumba class with every intention of attending the classes regularly? For the first month or two, we are faithful. Then our motivation begins to fizzle and the next thing you know, once again, we stop going altogether and we make every excuse to justify not exercising or eating healthily.
The Worst Day Of Our Lives...
Our members come from a variety of backgrounds, but we've found that the majority decide to join Liberty HealthShare for the same reason: at some point, they realized insurance was not an ideal way to face healthcare costs. With their financial commitment rising and the payoff diminishing, they make a bold move and leave insurance behind in favor of a Christian community characterized by personal responsibility and the stewardship of health and resources. Charles R. is one such member in Texas, and this is his story.
Freedom: Good For Business AND Healthcare
The past few years have held some interesting developments in various industries. In the hotel and hospitality arena, for instance, Airbnb has taken the world by storm, putting choice regarding travel into the hands of the consumer. It's no longer the expectation that travel must include a hotel stay and the associated costs you can be guaranteed to incur. Instead, travelers can choose not only the amount they prefer to pay, but also the arrangements, the proximity to their destination, and how much they want to engage with and experience what the particular location has to offer.
Sharing Guidelines Are Changing
This past week, the following message was distributed to Liberty HealthShare members by e-mail. Each year, we invite Liberty HealthShare members to cast their vote on possible changes to our Sharing Guidelines. On March 1st, we distributed information and instructions for this year's annual member vote. If you took the time to voice your opinion on the three potential amendments to our Sharing Guidelines, thank you. We are grateful for you, our members, and we value your opinion on the future direction of our ministry.
VideoMedicine Gets Her To The Church On Time
As the Managing Editor here in Liberty HealthShare's Communications department, I spend my days writing blog posts, compiling our monthly newsletter, composing posts for our social media accounts, and editing written content. Throughout my professional life, I've dreamed of writing for a living, so this job is a lot of fun for me. As with all jobs, there is some stress associated with my work, but I manage just fine. I've learned that not all stress is a bad thing, especially if you're able to handle it and allow it to motivate you. Once in a while, though, the balance tips too far, and it's usually then that I get sick. In early March, I got married. The stress of wedding planning would have been manageable on its own, but with the added strain of a move and beginning a new job here at Liberty, I was pretty depleted. Add to that the fact that I am a stress eater who prefers cheese and coffee to salads and water, and I created the perfect storm for illness to take me down.
What's (Not) Happening In Washington
A few weeks ago, we sent an action update to our membership, inviting you to contact your congressmen concerning the language in the proposed American HealthCare Act. If you took the time to call or e-mail your Representative, we want to thank you.
Speak Up For Healthcare Sharing
If you are an active or pending Liberty HealthShare member who has opted to receive our occasional e-mails, you should have received a message from us regarding the following: This Thursday, the House of Representatives will vote on the American Health Care Act. We need your help. We are asking you to take a few minutes to call your Congressional Representative and urge him or her to advocate for language that supports healthcare sharing ministries in the bill.
Dale Bellis Takes The Main Stage
Liberty HealthShare Executive Director Dale Bellis recently took the main stage at CPAC 2017 in Washington, DC, bringing a message about patient rights and freedom to a live audience of several thousand, and to countless online and television viewers.
Questions New Members Are Asking
Every year during open enrollment, Liberty HealthShare experiences even greater and faster growth than normal. Although we are not bound by this enrollment season, many Americans choose to join us at that time. This year was no exception to the rule, so we know a good number of you are new or relatively new members. If you are just joining us, no doubt you have some questions about the way membership works, how sharing is accomplished, and other concepts related to Liberty HealthShare.
CPAC Healthcare Panel With Dale Bellis
After Liberty HealthShare Executive Director Dale Bellis' delivered a rousing speech at CPAC, he served as a panelist in a session entitled "Recovering from Obama Flu: What is the Prescription for Healthcare?" Dale's professional background made him an excellent addition to the panel, and his fellow panelists also contributed an impressive list of healthcare credentials with regard to both policy and administration. As the title suggests, this panel was focused on the healthcare legacy of President Obama; otherwise known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Dale and the other panelists had in common a focus on returning healthcare freedom to individuals as the best remedy for our current, broken system - an approach with which Liberty HealthShare members can wholeheartedly agree.
Live & In Person, It's Liberty HealthShare
Liberty HealthShare is always looking for opportunities to stay informed about national developments and movements that impact us as a sharing community. One of the ways we accomplish this is by strategically choosing and attending conferences that touch on healthcare, policy, and faith. These events offer us a chance to gather important information and pass it along to our members, to interact with and educate change-makers in various arenas, and to meet and hear from people just like you who are also in attendance.
Show Your Heart Some Love This Valentine's Day
Most people know Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, but chocolate hearts aren’t the only ones occupying the spotlight this time of year. February also marks American Heart Month, which is a great time to commit (or recommit!) yourself to making choices that will positively impact your cardiovascular health.
Executive Director Dale Bellis' Member Update
The exponential increase we have seen in enrollments tells us we have clearly tapped into a nationwide hunger for healthcare freedom. With your continued engagement as cost-conscious consumers of healthcare, we hope to serve you and many others for years to come.
Beat Winter At Its Own Game
Welcome! After the holidays and year-end commitments, we're back with the last portion of our cold-weather series on maintaining and increasing health. We started with ideas for staying fit both outdoors and indoors, then shared recipes for winter squash, cruciferous vegetables, baked goods, soups and stews, and roasted foods. Today we continue this series with ideas to protect and improve your mental and emotional health despite the cold and limited daylight. Stay tuned for more. Well, you made it through the busyness of the holidays. Now a good portion of the country faces the long stretch of winter, featuring dull, gray days, long nights, and very little in the way of holidays or time away from work to look forward to. If you fall into this category, the uphill climb to springtime and sunshine can be a rough one, but it doesn't have to be unbearable.
Observe Hot Tea Month For Health - Healthy Tips From Sue
Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe the holidays are already in the rearview mirror, isn’t it? I hope you were able to spend some of that time making memories with your loved ones and getting some rest. I hope you were also able to prioritize your health in the midst of all the parties, food, and social engagements. If not, don’t give up. There’s no time like the present to hit the “reset button”, from diet to fitness, from rest to stress management. You might not realize that there is a widely available product that can positively impact multiple facets of your health. It’s not a fad or a gimmick. As a matter of fact, it’s ancient and usually quite affordable. It’s tea. January is hot tea month, so let’s learn a little more about this common beverage.
We've Surpassed 100,000 Lives. Let’s Celebrate!
Last month, we sent an e-mail to our membership in celebration of the fact that Liberty HealthShare had just achieved a milestone. In mid-December, our membership surpassed 100,000 people. It’s hard to believe that since then, we’ve added over 10,000 more individuals to our community!
