Late last month, Liberty HealthShare Executive Director Dale Bellis met with lawmakers in Washington, D.C. to a) update them on the growth of healthcare sharing households across America, b) inform them of the positive impact membership in a healthcare sharing ministry has on its members, and c) educate them on the value of making Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) accessible to members of healthcare sharing ministries.
We're happy to say that Congress is taking action on this issue. HR 2310, the Faith in Health Savings Accounts Act of 2017, would make members of healthcare sharing ministries eligible to contribute to an existing or create a new HSA. Now, your representatives would like to hear from you, the stakeholders in this proposed legislation.
Lawmakers' inability to reach consensus on healthcare reform means that healthcare sharing remains unchanged. Rest assured, we will continue to advocate for the recognition and protection of our faith-based cost-sharing method. However, many of you have asked us about the status of accessing, contributing to, and/or creating an HSA.
While current law allows us to use the funds in an existing HSA account, it prohibits members of healthcare sharing ministries from contributing to an existing HSA or creating a new one. We don’t think this makes much sense. After all, we are self-pay patients! It would be of great benefit if we could set aside pre-tax dollars for our medical costs.
