Drip. Perk. French press. Pour over. Cold brew. Espresso. Nitro-infused. What's your favorite way to drink coffee? Today is National Coffee Day, according to...well, whoever it is that assigns celebratory days for beloved foods and beverages.
Thankfully, unlike some of the more decadent foods deemed special enough to get their own day - think bacon, pie, and ice cream - coffee doesn't have to derail your health and wellness goals. In fact, according to the Mayo Clinic website, the health benefits of consuming coffee likely outweigh the risks for most people.Of course, the benefits of drinking coffee can easily be outweighed by common additives like flavored creamer, sugar syrups, or liqueurs. Keep in mind that liquid calories can sabotage your diet as fast as you can say "vanilla latte". Some coffee shop offerings actually exceed the calorie count of a fast food burger!
So in order to keep yourself on track health-wise, do you have to resign yourself to drinking only black coffee for the rest of your life? Not unless you want to! Here are a few ideas so you won't break the calorie bank every time you find yourself in need of a caffeine boost: buy good quality coffee beans and grind them just before brewing for the best possible flavor; replace your creamer with organic, high-quality dairy or coconut milk; use a natural sweetener like honey or agave instead of sugar; or try doing a web search for a recipe so you can make a homemade version of your usual coffee shop order. You might also find you end up saving quite a bit of money moonlighting as an at-home barista!
Bonus: Do a web search for "National Coffee Day" to find out where you can join in the celebration. Some shops will donate to charity for every cup sold, and others are offering discounted or FREE coffee!
