We often say that the adjustment to a healthsharing mentality from a third-party payment system mentality can be a drastic one. New members don't always understand our push for personal responsibility and a community mindset right away. It is our privilege to come alongside and equip members because we believe it honors the biblical standard of caring for one's neighbor. Our model is based in part off of Hebrews 13:16, which reads "Don’t neglect to do what is good and to share, for God is pleased with such sacrifices" (HCSB). Healthsharing is made possible when each member cares for the needs of another member as a means of pleasing the Lord. We hold this concept at the core of what we do.
The sharing mindset was built into the structure (and name!) of our ShareBox system. Our members know that the digital ShareBox on our website is the receptacle both for their suggested monthly share amount and medical bill submissions. However, the ShareBox also serves to connect members with each other as their medical needs are being met. By accessing the "Sharing History" tab in their personal ShareBox, members can see how their sharing amount is distributed each month and send a personal message of encouragement to each recipient member. Our blog is filled with testimonials from members who have experienced Christ-honoring care from the Liberty HealthShare community in the midst of crisis, and this feature gives members the opportunity to contribute to that care.
By matching monthly share amounts to member needs within the month, funds go directly towards eligible bills as quickly as possible. Liberty HealthShare does not retain funds to match members' share amounts, which means we cannot offer refunds to members who decide to leave our healthsharing community. The monthly share amounts those members have contributed have already been applied to someone's maternity stay, an annual wellness visit, a bill for a broken arm, or another pressing medical need. We believe that this direct application of share amount to eligible need is the most sustainable way to steward our resources.
We have found more and more benefits of operating in a sharing community as time goes on, and it strengthens our commitment to ethical healthcare costs and helping people with the same values provide for the needs of others. We invite you to take ownership of the sharing mindset throughout your Liberty experience by treating healthcare as a means to glorify God and love other people.
