My Peace I Give To You

July 18th, 2018

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27 (NKJV)

It doesn't take much to notice that the world around us is in a constant state of crisis. Newsreels spit images of war, political dissension, familial trauma, natural disasters, and other atrocities with every release. Turning off the TV or closing the tab isn't enough to block out the turmoil. We experience personal relationships fraught with tension and unexpected hurt, and our hearts can falter under the weight of it all. The world is incapable of offering lasting peace, and we have no sustainable way to navigate the pain.

However, the heart of Jesus was marked by a peace that thrived independent of his circumstances. His years on earth were filled with a busy ministry and thousands who made demands on his time, yet he operated out of a tempered gentleness that came from a deep relationship with his Father. Jesus invites his followers to ground our peace in our settled redemption and a whole-peace reality yet to come. We can take hold of God's peace by centering our thoughts and well-being on Him. By reminding ourselves that the outcome is secure and that our current circumstances are guarded by His provision, we assuage the fears that our circumstances can so easily prompt us towards.
