Liberty HealthShare: Too Good To Be True?

With the new Affordable Care Act (ACA) now passed into law and in full effect, people are wondering what options they have to pay for their medical costs. One approach that isn’t commonly talked about is healthcare sharing or medical cost sharing. It is acknowledged in the ACA, but many people do not know about it. Of those who have heard of medical cost sharing, many are confused as to what it really is and how it works. Let’s start by saying medical cost sharing it IS NOT insurance, it IS legal, and it has been around for quite some time in faith communities. In fact, it is a biblical approach to paying for unexpected and unaffordable healthcare costs. Galatians 6:2 says, “Bear one another’s burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ." Acts 2:44-45 says,“All Believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need...”

In America, medical cost sharing has been around since 1988. As an industry, it has shared more than $20,000,000 of medical expenses in the past decade alone. It’s a voluntary system in which people contribute funds each month to those who are in need of help with their medical bills. At some point, each member will need other members to share their funds so they can pay their medical expenses. Liberty HealthShare is a group of like-minded individuals joined together for the express purpose of sharing medical expenses. We are a member-owned, member-driven, and member-decided program.

How does healthcare sharing work?

Connect: The first thing you should do is enroll as a member of Liberty HealthShare. The annual membership cost is $125 and the process can be done online! You will join a community of people who have committed themselves to helping each other in a time of need.

Give: Once you are a member of Liberty HealthShare, you will set up an online “Sharebox”. Each month, via credit or debit card, you will give your predetermined share amount to another member who has a need. Giving can be done automatically or manually. By contributing each month you will remain eligible to receive funds once you have an eligible need.

Receive: If you have an eligible medical incident, give your Liberty HealthShare card to the medical provider. This lets the community know that you have a need, and Liberty HealthShare will match monthly share amounts from other members to your bill. After you have met your Annual Unshared Amount (AUA) from $500 for a single to $1500 for a family, the rest of your eligible bills will be shared!
