Last Friday, January 19th, members of the Liberty HealthShare communications staff participated in the 45th annual March for Life, held in Washington, D.C. Starting at 1 p.m., we walked up Constitution Avenue with hundreds of thousands of other pro-life individuals to demonstrate our love and support for both pre-born babies and their mothers.
The March culminated on the steps of the Supreme Court, the same building where abortion on demand was legalized in 1973. Ever since then, the March for Life has been held on or around the anniversary of Roe v. Wade to demonstrate that for those who believe life begins at conception, this issue is far from settled.
The weather this year couldn't have been better, with sun and temperatures in the 50s all day. In previous years, inclement weather has posed a challenge, especially for those traveling from out of state. Two years ago, the forecast kept many away, forcing buses en route to Washington to turn around. However, those who could safely travel still showed up by the thousands as a historic blizzard began its march up the east coast.
Each year, marchers are encouraged to share their reasons for participating by using the hashtag #whywemarch when posting on social media. Many attendees also carried signs stating their reasons for attending. These ranged from the intensely personal (i.e., "I march because my mother chose life for me when she was pressured to abort.") to the more general (i.e., "A person's a person no matter how small. - Dr. Suess"). Many students and other young people also carried signs and wore t-shirts stating either "We are the pro-life generation." or "I survived Roe v. Wade. Roe v. Wade will not survive me." The atmosphere throughout the day was reverent, even festive, demonstrating the hope felt by all those who were present concerning the future of the pro-life movement in our nation.
As an organization that recognizes the inherent dignity of all human life from conception to natural death, Liberty HealthShare is unapologetically pro-life. We were proud to represent the ministry at this year's March for Life and hope to continue doing so in the future!
