According To Your Faith Be It Done

February 22nd, 2018

And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” And their eyes were opened. Matthew 9:27-30 (ESV)

As Christians, we all struggle with living out the belief that God's grace truly is enough to save us. The tendency to think we can earn our salvation presents a daily battle for most if not all of us. Many times, Jesus' message of a new covenant came into direct conflict with the teaching of the religious leaders. This radical message of faith characterized His ministry in the region of Galilee, detailed in the book of Matthew.

Reserving his harshest rebukes for those who self-righteously believed the law could save them, Jesus instead took time for those who demonstrated faith in him, such as the blind men in this passage. The words Christ chose are no mistake: it was not these men's works that would deliver them, but rather their faith. And according to their great faith and recognition that he was the Messiah, they received their sight. May we believe as deeply as they.
